In the northeast of India there are seven states which were not open to tourists (even those from India) until 1995. These states, known as the North-East Frontier Agency, are the least-known states of India. In fact, little was known of this area during the 20th century. It is bordered by Burma, Tibet, and Bhutan.
These states are unlike those typically thought of as "India", in that they are somewhat primitive and very tribal. The images in this gallery are of places and people I visited in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Nagaland (once home of headhunters).
Most of the street scenes are from Kolkatta (Calcutta) where my journey began. |
