Namibia: Land of Contrasts
Namibia, Land of Contrasts
Launch Gallery - Namibia is a wonderful land of contrasts, located in southern Africa, the western border of which is the Atlantic Ocean. It is a large country, sparsely populated with a vibrant people enjoying a stable, democratic government dedicated to conservation; 40% of the surface area of the country is under conservation management.

It is a uniquely diverse country, geographically and culturally--the land, its wildlife, its people. It boasts the highest sand dunes in the world; the biggest and oldest game preserves in Africa; the ancient culture of the Himba people. Namibia is a technicolor wonderland--a photographer's delight.

Namibia: The Himba People
Namibia, The Himba People
Launch Gallery - The Himba tribes live in one of the most barren, harsh, and inaccessible regions of the world--northern Namibia. They are an indigenous, nomadic people who still live according to ancient traditions. Their environment and culture are extremely fragile, but they have kept their ethnic individuality and culture in the seclusion of Kaokoland. They are nomadic pastoralists, moving their herds of goats and cattle to different watering places. The proud Himba women spend hours each day on their beauty care, rubbing their bodies with a cream of butterfat and ochre powder which give their skin a reddish shine. This is their ideal of beauty. These images of the Himba people show that they are, indeed, beautiful people.

Mali
Mali
Launch Gallery - Mali, the largest country in West Africa, was a powerful and wealthy empire which dominated West Africa history for many centuries. The fabled city of Timbuktu lies on the edge of the Sahara Desert in Mali and was the renowned nerve center of Islamic learning and trade in the 15th and 16th centuries in Western Africa. The famous mud Djingareiber Mosque, built in the 14th century, is located in Timbuktu. Today, Mali is rich with tradition, culture, art, and diverse tribal groups. It is a fascinating, colorful place to visit and to meet its beautiful, friendly people.

Ethiopia
Ethiopia
Launch Gallery - Ethiopia, the ancient Christian kingdom of Abyssinia, is a country of immense diversity, in its geography, in its religions, and in its many cultures. With its beautiful, green Simien Mountains, its ancient orthodox Christian religious centers of Lalebella and Gondor with their incredible rock-hewn churches, its historic castles and unique cave churches, and its remote Omo River Valley tribes—Ethiopia is truly a fascinating and unique part of Africa.

This gallery presents my favorite images from the Omo Valley in the southwestern corner of Ethiopia. The Omo tribes, the Mursi, Hamar, Karo and Bumi, are among the most primitive and unchanged people in the world, largely untouched by the influences of the developed world. However, these primitive cultures will, no doubt, vanish in the not too distant future. I am lucky to have had the opportunity to visit these cultures before they disappear.
